March 2007 Concert Series
Sinfonia Cymru will be performing a series of three chamber concerts in March supported by the Arts Council of Wales. The orchestra will perform at Pontyberem Memorial Hall on Saturday 3 March, The Riverfront Hall in Newport on Sunday 4 March and The Gate in Cardiff on Monday 5 March. All performances start at 7.30pm.
Sinfonia Cymru will perform a diverse programme of Mozart, Shostakovich and Strauss and will be joined by Internationally renowned pianist Llyr Williams in a performance of Shostakovich’s Concerto for Piano, Trumpet and Strings. Llyr, born in Pentrebychan North Wales, has performed as a soloist in the last year with Welsh National Opera, BBC National Orchestra of Wales and the Halle to name but a few. Llyr performs regularly with Sinfonia Cymru, continuing the complete Beethoven Concerti series.
Of course, there is only one problem with performing a piano concerto in Pontyberem Memorial Hall – there is no piano! The Orchestra have hired a Steinway Piano for Ll?r especially for the concert, a testament to their commitment to bringing music-making at its highest level to communities all over Wales.
The Orchestra will also be joined by Jamie Prophet (Trumpet), one of Sinfonia Cymru’s own success stories. Jamie was previously a member of the orchestra and now is Principal Trumpet with the BBC Philharmonic.
The programme also comprises Mozart Symphony No. 29 in A Major and Adagio and Fugue in C Minor and Strauss’ Metamorphosen.
Now established as one of the most successful and talented young orchestras to have emerged over the past decade, Sinfonia Cymru are much in demand and perform approximately twelve chamber concerts and a Gala Concert every year.
Described by Bryn Terfel, who performs regularly with the orchestra, as “the most significant orchestral development in Wales in recent years” the orchestra has accompanied Bryn and his guests for the last three years at the prestigious Faenol Festival in North Wales and worked with him on a Christmas Tour of the UK in December 2005 and at the Henley Festival in July this year.
Sinfonia Cymru continues to go from strength to strength under the encouragement and guidance of its creator and Musical Director, Gareth Jones. Together they have developed strong relationships with some of the most respected and world-renowned classical artists Including Carlo Rizzi, Dennis O’Neill, Rebecca Evans, Peter Donohoe, Gwyn Hughes Jones and Patricia Bardon.
As an orchestra made up of young people with an average age of 23 years, Sinfonia Cymru are also proud of the strong bonds they have established with outstanding younger artists including David Childs, Llyr Williams, Catrin Finch, Natuko Yoshimoto, Guy Johnston and Chloë Hanslip.
