The Freddie Mercury Project
In June 2016 Sinfonia Cymru commissioned Vlad Maistorovici to create new arrangements of classic Queen songs for The Freddie Mercury Project.
Composer Vlad Maistorovici was the Director and Violin Soloist for the series, which also featured soloists Harry Cameron-Penny and Robin Green on clarinet and piano. The series toured to Cardiff, Newport, Llanelli and Brecon.
Birdsong – Cân yr Adar
In November 2016 Sinfonia Cymru worked with Gwilym Simcock and Kizzy Crawford on Birdsong – Cân yr Adar, a bilingual concert of new music which fused jazz, classical and soul-folk, and also featured visual art projections by visual artist Ruby Fox.
Birdsong – Cân yr Adar toured to Bangor, Pwllheli, Cardigan, Newport, Cardiff (including a special performance for schools), and London, as part of the Hampstead Arts Festival and London Jazz Festival.
Boats, Tunnels & Bridges
The Creative Learning project Boats, Tunnels & Bridges, in partnership with composer Liz Lane, film production company AOTV, Chepstow School and Thornwell Primary School, took place in December 2016 and celebrated the 50th anniversary of the first Severn Bridge, the Brynglas Tunnel and the last Aust ferry crossing.
A level Media students from Chepstow School worked alongside AOTV to produce short films inspired by the Severn Bridge, the Brynglas Tunnel and the Severn Princess ferry boat. These films were then used as the inspiration for compositions by A level Music students, assisted by Liz Lane and our musicians. The music was performed live by Sinfonia Cymru to accompany a screening of the films for fellow students, parents and guests. Pupils from Thornwell Primary School worked with Liz, lyricist David Lewis and our musicians to compose their own ferry boat songs, inspired by the journeys of the Severn Princess. They also performed these live, accompanied by our musicians.
