On 20th October we were part of a very special birthday celebration – Bryn Terfel’s 50th birthday concert at the Royal Albert Hall. The orchestra played with a whole host of amazing performers including John Owen Jones, Danielle de Niese, Alison Balsom, Catrin Finch, Only Men Aloud, Hannah Waddingham, Ksenija Sidorova, Hannah Stone, Calan, Rebecca Evans, Aleksandr Antonenko, Sting and of course birthday boy Bryn.
The concert featured a varied repertoire, from operatic classics like Nessun Dorma and The Pearl Fisher’s Duet, to folk favourites such as Shenandoah, and new takes on epic pop songs like Bridge Over Troubled Water and Roxanne. The Royal Albert Hall was packed with a very appreciative audience and the night was guided by genial compere and Hollywood superstar Michael Sheen.
It was a fantastic evening and thank you to all those who wished us well, came along on the night, and for all the lovely comments and feedback we received. The concert was filmed by Sky Arts and will be broadcast soon.
We have two concerts this week, First Wednesday at Newport’s Riverfront Theatre, and an evening concert at Penarth Pavilion on Thursday 5th November. Thanks to support from the Cavatina Chamber Music Trust, people aged 8-25 can get free tickets for the Pavilion show, so it’s a fantastic opportunity for young music fans to come along and perhaps get their first taste of a Sinfonia Cymru concert. It’s been several years since we last played in Penarth so it’ll be great to return and to play at such a beautiful seaside venue (is it too late in the year for ice cream cones…?)
As the end of the year approaches we’re looking ahead to 2016 which will be a very exciting year for us – our 20th birthday! We have lots of plans so stay tuned for more information very soon!
